“Front porch,” “sitting porch,” “sunporch” — long-time symbols of Southern hospitality. “Come on, join us on the porch,” a commonly spoken phrase between people of the South. It’s an invitation to spend time with friends and family, to cool down with a cold drink, to watch the neighbors pass by, and to relax with good company. We love to explore our past, and we invite you on our journey to follow the soul of the South into the traditions of tomorrow. We feature stories that focus on Southern culture and interesting tales of our shared history. We present art that is both comforting and familiar, as well as what is newly emerging and exciting. We feature restaurants that are old stand-bys along with what’s new and innovative in the culinary south. PorchScene is a collective effort of our staff at Front Porch Press, LLC., created to share all that we love of the South: culture, traditions, language, cuisine, music, art and soul. We are a small, independent-minded publishing company that is committed to celebrating the Southern voice and sharing “a tale, well told.” Thank you for joining us here at PorchScene.
WHO WE ARE:
TOM LAWRENCE: THE RAINMAKER
Tom Lawrence was a self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur, and he established Front Porch Press, LLC as a viable means for aspiring southern writers to publish. He conceived PorchScene as an extension of that entity, to provide a weekly outlet for those with a deep-seeded passion about the South to express a common “southerness.” A lover of the South, its history, its food, its inhabitants and its beauty, Tom brought his unique wit to our pages as a regular contributor, and was always on the look-out for others who wanted to share interesting stories about what’s going on in our deep-south world. Tom passed away in March of 2017 but his idea for this blog lives on.
MARY PRATER: PORCHSCENE CREATOR
Using her creativity and expert computer skills, Mary took Tom’s idea for a blog about the South and turned it into a reality. She gave us our name, our logo, built our first site, and she established our social media accounts. Mary was responsible for bringing many of our contributors on board. In short, there would be no PorchScene without what Mary brought to the table.
DEBORAH FAGAN CARPENTER: EDITOR
A contributor since our inception, Deborah is Managing Editor and Creative Director. Her focus is to describe the South from many angles—both positive and negative, all the while seeking to present the many creative, innovative, and unique people who make our world special, and to encourage other southerners to share their voices in that effort. Portraying the beauty of the South is important to her and she works to achieve that through the use of her own photography and images from other contributors and public sites.

I just read your article on LaGrange, Tennessee, and I wanted to thank you. I have never been there personally, but an ancestor named Dovey Maria Brevard lived there and died in 1838.. I don’t know what brought her there from N.C.. She never married and didn’t have children, but might have been a teacher. She left money in her will for a Presbyterian church to be built and “proper headstones” for her parents back in Iredell, North Carolina. I imagine she was happy in LaGrange; it looks absolutely beautiful and graceful.
Ellen, thank you so much for sharing that with me. It really is a beautiful village and nothing much has changed since I wrote that article a few years ago. I do believe there is a small Presbyterian church there that perhaps your ancestor was responsible for building.
Thanks again for reaching out to me.
What a great response to a piece I loved writing.
